What is CBD?

CBD stands for cannabidiol. It’s the second most prevalent active ingredient of cannabis, but it doesn’t cause a “high” because it is directly derived from the hemp plant.

According to the World Health Organisation, “In Humans, CBD exhibits no effects indicative of any abuse or dependence potential… To date, there is no evidence of public health-related problems associated with the use of pure CBD.”

The Body and CBD

CBD is similar to chemicals that your body already produces, endocannabinoids. These are part of a network of chemicals and receptors called the endocannabinoid system (ECS).

The ECS has receptors throughout most major organs, the nervous and immune systems keeping everything in balance. Because the body already produces chemicals very similar to CBD it supports the ECS by triggering the same effects.

Benefits of CBD

CBD can be used to help treat a number of health issues such as chronic pain, epilepsy, anxiety, insomnia and a recent study in the journal Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry suggests CBD can help with healthy weight loss.

The World Health Organisation completed a report on the different therapeutic benefits of CBD on conditions such as Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, Multiple Sclerosis, showing that it could be useful treatment for these conditions but further, more extensive research needs to be completed.
